Gestational Diabetes

This is a type of diabetes which is first seen in pregnant women who did not have a prior history with diabetes. It’s detectable in the second trimester but can occur at any stage during pregnancy.

It only occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves on its own. For women who experience gestational diabetes, it means that their glucose level was normal before pregnancy. It occurs because the body cannot produce enough insulin to cope with the extra glucose during pregnancy. Most women who develop gestational diabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes later on in life.
